Viking Cruise Day 8 - The seas were angry that day my friend
Let me just start today’s blog by saying GO BLUES!! Wooo!!! Horray to them! It was the first thing Guy looked at this morning as soon as his eyes opened! We are very happy.
Our at sea day started WITHOUT breakfast. We were so mad! The itinerary said it was served until 10am! What the heck? They had all the places closed at 9:30. It made no sense, but a nice waiter from the restaurant told me to go up front and the one area had breakfast until 11. We went there and he made us waffles, but there was really nothing else except pastries. Where is my French toast people??? So as we sat down and looked over they were closing that area down as well!! What is happening? I’ll tell you what is happening, we are dorks and relied on our iPhones to update to the new time zone and they did NOT! So the restaurants were closing right on time...we were the idiots that didn’t figure it out and were an hour behind. This is why the cabin steward put the big red card on your bed at turndown REMINDING you to set your clocks forward. **Palm to forehead**
Yesterday as we pulled away from Seydisfjordur the captain came over the speaker and told us that bad weather was ahead of us and he wasn’t going to risk anything unpleasant for the passengers, so we were going to sail north of the Faroe Islands and bypass that stop. On we go to Norway and two days at sea in a row, instead of it being broken up by the Faroe Islands. We’ll be adding another location to our trip, Olden Norway. They have already posted the new excursions and we’ve signed up for the scenic ride to the glacier. Should be a lovely day. Perhaps our nice weather is over, but it was so wonderful we don’t mind if we have a few days that aren’t as perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a more stunning Iceland visit.
So after he made the announcement and we headed out into the Atlantic, it did start to get a smidge rougher. Since I didn’t know what was ahead and we have never cruised in bad weather, I chewed one of the lovely little sea sick tablets that my dearest friend, Tricia Asbury, gave me. They did Alaska the week before, so she ordered meds for all of us (after researching what worked best). She hooked me up with pills and ginger candy. She did a good job because I chewed one, then I slept like a baby. All night. And all day. Except for when we were getting food. I think the pill might have made me drowsy, but it was a glorious day of rest. So seriously, not much to talk about today except basically saying today I lived the life of a cat. I ate. I slept. I purred.
Lunch was the buffet. Guy had a cheese burger and fries, so no picture of that because your imagination should do the trick. It was a bit undercooked and when he showed it to me (after already eating half of it) I wouldn’t let him eat the rest and went to go get him some spare ribs that I was eating...because they were phenomenal. I had Lo Mein noodles with veggies, spare ribs and some potatoes. All very good. Dessert was again a mini buffet of its own with a tart, pudding and icecream. I had plans to walk on the treadmill today, but alas, a nap was calling me...and nap I did.
About 6pm we went down to watch the early show. It was the Viking Sky’s singers doing a medley of songs from America in the 50s and 60s. All the singers were from England and they were good. The blonde girl was the star and carried the rest of them, but together they blended nicely and it was fun.
Dinner followed and nothing on the menu tonight struck our fancy, but everything we ordered was again spectacular and we enjoyed every bite. Gnocchi for me (tonight it was the real deal) and scallops for Guy. Pictures are attached.
As I look out the window the water does appear a touch smoother although our room still creaks and sways continually. Walking down the aisle is fun and a challenge for the some of the older folks on the trip. Most of them being seasoned cruising pros I assume because they are eating and laughing like no tomorrow. Earlier today the swells in the ocean were pretty big and once the water spashed all the way up to our window, which would be about half way up the boat. I’m not joking when I say that Titanic is an optional movie to watch on your TV tonight. I’ll pass.
On a sadder note, when we returned to our room last night we had a letter from Viking sitting on our bed (along with that big red card telling you to set your clocks forward **eyeroll) that apologized for the excursion today that did not “meet the standards of Viking”. So apparently when we got back, the griping lady I gave the Oreos to because she thought the food was so bland, along with many others, vocalized their dislike of the tour guide on bus 15 (poor thing it was her first time) and the bad food at the hotel. So Viking is reimbursing those of us on bus numbers 15 and 16 (they ate with us in the hotel) 25% of the cost of the tour and said they would not book with that guide or hotel again. We were both immediately like “awwwww”. Poor lady. I hope she doesn’t get fired over it. And I’m telling you, the meal was delicious! People are hard to please. That’s for sure.
The time changes again tonight, so now we’ll be 7 hours ahead. Our phones already reflect this. French toast will be back in my belly tomorrow morning.
Viking review of the day: the bathroom floors are heated. ;)

Life as a cat is the BEST life--ESPECIALLY if you can get French toast for every breakfast....
